Snow Bud

Snow Bud is one of Dutch Passion Seeds’ high-altitude strains, bred for growers who need something tougher than the average outdoor plant. It was developed and selected over several generations in the Swiss Alps, with the same kind of mountain-focused work Dutch Passion used for Pamir Gold. These feminised seeds are aimed mainly at outdoor and greenhouse cultivation, especially in colder, wetter or changeable conditions.

The genetics are straightforward and old-school: an Afghan Indica crossed with a South African Sativa. That pairing gives Snow Bud its mixed character. The sativa side shows in the structure, leaves and upbeat effect, while the Afghan indica side helps with speed and cold resistance. Dutch Passion describes the balance as roughly 60–75% sativa and 25–40% indica, so expect a sativa-dominant plant rather than a heavy indica type.

Snow Bud gets its name from the look of the flowers. The buds can carry lots of white pistils and a thick coat of trichomes, giving the tops a frosted, snow-covered appearance. The flowers tend to be long rather than chunky, with an open structure and a good flower-to-leaf ratio. Foxtailing can appear, and the plant often grows with a strong central cola surrounded by smaller side buds.

Made for rougher outdoor conditions

This is a robust outdoor strain with a particular reputation for mountain growing. Snow Bud was selected to handle a wide range of climates, including humid weather and colder conditions. It also has good resistance to mould, mildew and bud rot, which is a useful trait when outdoor weather is less than ideal. Dutch Passion presents it as suitable for high altitude areas as well as sea level guerrilla grows.

It’s also a forgiving plant. The breeder notes a high tolerance for beginner mistakes around feeding, watering and climate, so Snow Bud can suit first-time growers as well as outdoor growers who want hardy genetics. Outdoors, it normally reaches around 1.5–2 metres, with an early indoor start allowing plants to reach about 2.5–3 metres outside. In its natural shape it can take on a Christmas tree structure, with long, full side branches.

Snow Bud can also be grown indoors under artificial light, including LED, and it can be used in hydro, semi-hydro or organic setups. It is most at home outside, but it isn’t restricted to one style of cultivation. Topping or FIM can be used to limit height. Indoors, Dutch Passion suggests SCROG when working with fewer plants per square metre, with a slightly longer vegetative period as it can be slow to start. It can also be grown in SOG, with the lower 2–4 branches removed in time so the plant can focus on a sturdy main bud.

Flowering time, yield and structure

The usual flowering time is about 8 weeks, with the broader range given as 7–9 weeks. Faster phenotypes may finish in around 7 weeks, while colder conditions can push some plants closer to 9 weeks. Outdoors, harvest is usually around the end of September to early October, and greenhouse plants average around 8 weeks.

Indoor yields are described as moderate, averaging around 350–400 g/m², with up to about 450 g/m² in ideal conditions. Outdoors, Snow Bud can produce several hundred grams per plant, including in severe mountain climates. The internode distance is average, with small spaces between many of the buds rather than one dense solid mass, a structure that supports its resistance to mould and bud rot.

Spicy skunk flavour and an energetic high

The aroma is pungent, skunky and earthy, with clear spicy notes. The flavour follows that spicy line, with piney touches and occasional sweet or bitter notes. Some smokers pick up cinnamon, honey and other spice nuances, and the smoke is often described as smooth rather than harsh on the throat.

The effect is more mental than physical. Snow Bud gives a medium-strength head high with a relaxed, energetic feel, and most users report a happy, upbeat mood. The body effect is lighter, more muscle relaxation than couchlock, so it is better suited to daytime or early evening use than to anyone wanting a heavy narcotic stone.

Snow Bud is listed with a very high THC rating rather than an exact THC percentage. The headline cannabinoid figures given are CBG 1.04%, CBC 0.25%, CBD <0.05% and CBN <0.05%. Its main listed terpenes are limonene, beta-myrcene, linalool, beta-caryophyllene and humulene, which fits well with its spicy, earthy, skunky profile.
