Description
GrandDaddy Purple is Barney’s Farm Seeds’ take on a California classic, available as feminised seeds. It comes from the well-known pairing of Purple Urkle x Big Bud, combining the purple indica character of Purple Urkle with the heavier, chunkier production associated with Big Bud.
This is a 70% indica, 30% sativa strain with 25% THC. GrandDaddy Purple has long been one of the names tied to the purple cannabis category, especially for growers and collectors who like deep colour, grape-candy flavour, strong resin output and a settled body effect.
The plant stays compact indoors, with a short, bushy indica structure and broad, dark leaves. Indoor height is around 100 cm, so it’s a sensible option where headroom is limited. The flowers are large, rounded and firm, often forming substantial colas with deep purple and violet shades, bright orange hairs and a heavy white coating of crystal resin.
Flowering time is 55–65 days. Indoors, yields are listed at up to 600 g/m². Outdoors, plants can reach up to 180 cm and produce up to 1000 g per plant, with harvest around the second to third week of October. It’s described as moderately easy to grow rather than difficult, but the density of the flowers is worth respecting. Late in bloom, larger buds may need support, and humidity should be watched to help avoid mould problems.
GrandDaddy Purple responds well to training such as LST and topping, which can improve light penetration through its bushy frame. Barney’s Farm also recommends super soil and organic nutrients for flavour development, while cooler night temperatures late in flowering can help bring out the signature purple colours.
The flavour is a big part of the appeal. Sweet grape and juicy berry notes come through first, with a candy-like fruitiness on the palate. The finish turns earthier and slightly pungent, with subtle herbal notes and a lingering grape aftertaste. The aroma follows the same line: sweet grape, berry and a pungent earthy edge rather than citrus, fuel or spice.
The effect is relaxing, euphoric and body-heavy. Expect a warm lift in mood followed by deep physical calm, with the classic indica couch-lock feel becoming more noticeable as it settles in. Barney’s Farm presents it as an evening strain, better suited to slowing down than staying active.
GrandDaddy Purple suits anyone after a recognised purple indica with clear heritage, manageable indoor size, dense violet buds and a sweet grape-and-berry profile. It isn’t just a colour strain; the Purple Urkle x Big Bud genetics, 25% THC and heavy resin-coated flowers give it a very clear identity.
