These patients can purchase cannabis from state-approved dispensaries. But it's important to note that the law places some restrictions on how medical cannabis can be consumed. Smoking cannabis is prohibited, but patients can consume it in other forms such as oils, edibles, capsules, or vaporizers.

The law further specifies that consumption must be confined to private residences or places where the owners authorize the use of medical cannabis. Public consumption, irrespective of its medical necessity, remains illegal.

Qualifications and Limitations

Patients can have up to a 30-day supply of cannabis, which is 1 ounce (28 grams) of dry cannabis or 8 grams of THC in concentrate or edible form. Home cultivation of cannabis is prohibited, ensuring that all medical cannabis is regulated and sourced through the approved dispensaries.

To get an MMJ card, patients must obtain a recommendation from an authorized doctor and pay a $25 application fee. There are several qualifying conditions for medical cannabis use, including but not limited to cancer, chronic pain, epilepsy, HIV/AIDS, and PTSD.
